Some of the Trends coming through for Spring Summer 11

Military Might

After seeing a few parades last week at the Myer Rosemount Fashion Festival I thought I’d put together some of the top trends for the Spring/Summer season.

Utility – The Military trend has come back this season stronger than ever. Hints of khaki, cargo pants, T-shirts with military inspired buttons trims and details can be worn back with anything to update your look. Don’t be afraid to mix the military styles back with a ditsy floral prints or the Aztec prints which are still strong this season.

Denim – Dark denims to light chambray denim’s are making a big come back. My hint is don’t  over do it. I’d be teaming your denim cut off’s with a military style t-shirt or a gorgeous ditsy camisole or over sized cotton tank.

The Darling Alex Chung in Denim

Tribal - The tribal prints this season are very abstract and many prints on the runways are not your typical tribal print but rather more innovative in the form of Aztec or digital prints (think Avatar). To view more details on Constantina’s Leopard Cardi – click here

Anna Paquin in an Alexander Mcqueen Avatar print dress

Feminine – Lace and Florals. Probably the biggest trend on the catwalks was your peasant feminine looks. Embrace the trend with a gorgeous floral maxi dress or top worn back with a high waisted skirt and update your look with anything that has a touch of lace.

Future sounds of Yoga in the beautiful sandstone surroundings of Paddington's Uniting Church - 395 Oxford St

So I know I mostly write about fashion, but I had one of the best experiences of my life last night and I had to share with you..

The last few weeks I’ve been feeling really stressed, consumed by negative energy and just a real lack of excitement. I’ve thought maybe it’s the fact that I need a holiday, a weekend away or just something to look forward to. The reality is I just needed something to snap me out of wherever I was and I think I found exactly what I was looking for.

When my friend mentioned this “Future Sound of Yoga” I must say I was very intrigued.  All I could grasp from our first conversation about it where the words yoga, fun and dancing and that was it I had to know more. So when Thursday night came round, and she mentioned she was going I thought why not. I’ve tried Bikram Yoga, Hatha and Iyenga but nothing compares to this.

I arrive to the stunning sandstone church up in Paddington to be greeted with a hug by Angel. It was a real hug the type I really needed after my stressful day. The Church was lined with candles and at the front was DJ Matt playing tunes  electronic dance music (e.g. Ambient, Trip Hop, Progressive, Tech House) and atmospheric artist albums (e.g. Bjork, Sigur Ros, Radiohead)… I was in awe by the setting.

The first hour of the class were your traditional yoga  and movements accompanied by the sounds of cool Cafe del Mar tracks. Halfway through the class we all stood up. The next thing I hear is the song Silence by Delirium start to crescendo and before you know it we are all dancing, dancing like none was watching. The music got louder, a smoke machine started blowing smoke, glo sticks came out and I felt like I was at a rave. It’s was so much fun! The last time I danced liked that was in Mykonos 3 years ago when I paid 45euros to get into Cavo Paradise. This was better, no high heels, no drunk tourists, I was relaxed with my girlfriends having a good old dance just like the old days.

Today I had a lightness about me, was it that id lost a few kilo’s from the dancing or was it that I’d let go of some stress, either way I think id found some sort of contentment. After all isn’t that what life is all about trying to pursue some sort of happiness?

Stomping into next Season!

Christian Dior

One thing is for sure the hottest trend right now are ankle boots!

Street Shot Paris

I am amazed and how quickly the stylish Sydney siders have taken up the trend when they have literally just hit the floor in Milan, Paris and London. When I mean hit the floor I mean just been released over the last 2 weeks.

Mary Katrantzou

My favourite person in my life was in Milan last week and when she saw the stylish Italian saleswomen unpacking these boots and putting them in the window she knew instantly that they were going to be a hit. It’s like Carrie Bradshaw loosing it over the Mary Jane Manolo Blahnik’s in Sexy in the City Urben Shoe Myth scene  (view the scene by clicking here). I am equally besotted by my shoes that was purchased from there, in one day I had 4 comments on them. Needless to say I have worn them for 7 days straight from when I received them, they really vamp up any look.

Street Shot Milan

Before you go worrying that it’s coming into spring and you don’t know if you want to invest in a good ankle boot think again! I’ve been told by all my gorgeous fashionistas who were lucky enough to travel through Greece, Italy and London over the past 2 months or so it doesn’t matter how hot it is people are wearing ankle boots! For now there are a variety of cool boots out from military styles, equestrian styles or the duck boot. They look great over a skinny leg jean, you can step it back with some wet look leggings (view Constantina’s wet look leggings here)  with a shift dress or funk it up with some tailored shorts or a printed skirt. Either way the shoes are the statement so it’s best to go for less is more on the top part!

Shoe Boots

Celebs and Curves..they can do it – so why cant I?

Botty - Licious..

Drew Barrymore – Curvy and Sexy!

Did somebody say start getting the booty in shape for Spring?

So it’s August…. August.  All I can think of is that it’s the city to surf next week. I start to feel tightness in my chest. It’s this weekend where I still cover up in leggings whilst all those fit city to surfer woman show off their toned legs. Ahhhhh! the fact that I am 5kg heavier than my usual summer weight and for some reason this year I’ve noticed all these lumps and bumps I didn’t seem to notice last year. It all becomes too much so I’ve convinced myself the city to surf is OUT OF THE QUESTION.

It seems as though the realisation that myself in short skirts and floaty bright coloured summer dresses in my “condition” didn’t seem to only cross my mind this morning but seemed to cross every normal female human being’s.

JT must like a bit a booty

It was today my best friend started her 3 day freshly squeezed juice detox where she only consumes freshly squeezed juice – yikes! She tells me she is doing it because she has to write an article on it for work, yeah right she can’t fool me I know she is thinking the same thing as I am. Then there is the green tea diet that has some herb in it that makes you lose weight and another friend tells me about the protein diet. All these crazy fad diets seem to come into my mind and then I have a flash back of this girl I used to work with who did the lemon detox and by day 3 turned into some feral, crazy person who would stare at me and salivate whilst I ate my almonds at my desk. Needless to say it only lasted 3 days, and after that she put on all the weight she had lost.

Either way whatever crazy fad diet we have all experimented in I am a true believer that the only way to lose weight is to graze a healthy, well balanced diet and exercise. I have attached some images of some high profile woman I admire which I am sure have tried a fad diet here or there but aren’t ultra thin. At the end of the day it’s not the size you are but the size of the impact you have whilst you are here.

The New Cargos & Cargo Inspired Looks

Khloe Kardashian J brand cargo pants ankle

Houlihan Jess Alba

‘Houlis’ the ‘new cargo’ have brought the trouser back to our wardrobes.  In a season of maxi dresses and bodycon dresses, the humble trouser has sat on the sidelines. Until now. J Brand Houlihan cargo pants are big news at the moment, and have won over the hearts of plenty style-conscious celebs. They sold out when released back in April, and have been seen on pavements from New York to Sydney. Charlize Theron’s a fan, as is Sarah Jessica Parker and Jessica Alba.

Louis Vuitton's Utility

The skinny jean has ruled the roost for a few years now, so it was time for a change. Houlis are skinny fit but not drainpipe. It occupies the middle ground between skinnies and combats. Naturally it’s a pretty dressed-down look, but you can sharpen things up a bit with heels if flats aren’t your bag.

If your not into a cargo pant you can always grunge up your look with the great utility inspired accessories out there at the moment boots, belts, bags or a fabulous jacket like our utility inspired Constantina Bomber Jacket and don’t forget your aviator shades!

Autumn Trends to Watch from Europe

Sexy Ísabel Lucas, Naomi Watts and Kate Bosworth

After a summer of bold shades and all manner of slightly bonkers micro trends popping up, next season’s looking decidedly austere in comparison. Forget print clash ensembles and other rule-breakers.

Release your 60's style - similar to that in Mad Men

As Europe’s Autumn season approaches, fashion’s going towards the subtle and chic. Think strong colours – deep plums and burnt oranges are big news, along with petrol blue and burgundy. Not to mention classic black and white. And the look and feel? It’s time to unleash your inner lady. Feminine florals are moving over in favour of sexy, tailored pieces that have plenty of the old va-va voom! Fans of the TV series Mad Men will have a field day next season.

Vogue June 2010

The Northern Hemisphere’s Autumn’s hottest styles are pure 60s secretary sexiness and ladylike chic from the likes of Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior.

Which is why the pencil skirt is such a great wardrobe staple. Get one of these little beauties and you will use it endlessly. We love the pencil skirt as it’s so damn versatile. It’s super-flattering, too and will never go out of style. What’s not to love? Check out the Power Rouched Skirt here for inspiration.

The Lady Who Wears it Well

Gwyneth Paltrow - Back in Black

At the moment it’s hats off to Gwyneth Paltrow. She’s soared in the style stakes over the past year or so, surprising everyone with her fashion forward looks. Maybe it’s her role as Pepper Potts in the blockbuster Iron Man films; perhaps she’s got a new stylist. Whatever she’s doing, it’s working. Gwynnie’s vamped it up of late, swapping her old, slightly frumpy look for a brand new, sleek and sexy one. We’re loving it!

Gwyneth Paltrow in Michael Kors with Fred Leighton jewellery

Showing a heavy preference for classic black gowns and chic but revealing minidresses, Gwyneth’s proved that you can’t beat simple, tailored styles and classic lines. She’s got grooming down to a fine art and seems to be able to look show-stopping without going over the top. Gwyneth, we salute you!

Our Power Shoulder dress here  is pure Gwyneth. If you fancy stealing her style, look no further.

ONE YEAR LATER – A Style Tribute to MJ

Socks and short trousers ::: When you are one of the world's best dancers you'd want to show off your fancy footwork too. In the process MJ made short trousers, white socks and loafers a style statement in its own right

A touch of sequins from jackets, tops to shoes is something we all love to wear out and will never go out of fashion!!

Thriller changed the face of music videos and also the face of fashion – red leather could never be worn again without a nod to the King of Pop.

So I can’t believe it’s been a year since MJ died! It’s one of those moments when you know exactly where you were when you heard the news.

Michael Jackson gave me so much more than great music.

It was “Black & White” that my brother and I drove our parents crazy with singing the lyrics too. “Thriller” that i danced to at my year 6 recital.

Cult label Balmain based their entire S/S 09 collection on MJ – and droves of celebrities followed, making their military jackets one of this season's most coveted items.

You know you’re a fashion icon to be reckoned with when you achieve world domination with a single glove. Ask anyone – one glove equals Michael Jackson, full stop

It was his song ” Don’t blame it on Sunshine” that got everyone off their chairs at my 21st… even the oldies, and his song “Heal the world” that made me cry in “This is it!” Click here to view the trailer and here for the ‘King of Pops’ Best videos. Or check out the best radio station for all his tracks online http://www.mjtunes.com/, even if you just play it in the background as you get ready for tonight

Military Style

Either way his songs are nostalgic, each one reminds me of something and the memories make me smile right now as I write this. Even if you weren’t a fan of his music his fashion touched our wardrobe culture in some ways too…I have surrounded my blog with my ‘pick of the pics’ . So pull out your military t-shirts, chuck on that leather jacket and put your sequins dancing shoes on, turn the music on and “Remember the Time”.

Once again the Military style jacket Balmain so divinely brought back last season

What to Wear with… Statement Shoes

Chanel

Alexander McQueen Heels

They were the success story for last season and are still going strong. We blame Carrie Bradshaw for this one! The killer heel and is still going strong in all its glorious combinations. Cut out detailing is big news, along with straps and a rather creative approach to the heel itself.

Louis Vitton Heels

So, you’ve invested in a pair of the season’s show-stoppers and want to wear them at every available opportunity. Whoa there, lady! These are statement shoes, so you will need to tread ever so carefully when it comes to teaming them with the rest of your wardrobe. These shoes speak for themselves and it can all go horribly wrong if you wear them with other very strong items.

As with many fashion conundrums, the key is simplicity. In a fashion year that’s been characterised by the bold and the bright, it’s been very easy to go overboard. Let the shoes do the talking and keep everything else toned down. Have a look at Constantina’s Animal Instinct Flame Dress here and Utility Leggings here for inspiration.
